Frequently asked questions
ERPNext, the Frappe Framework, ERP software and Nergaa Cloud.
Nergaa, ERPNext and hosting
What is ERPNext?
ERPNext is a free, open-source enterprise resource planning (ERP) system built on the Frappe Framework. It covers accounting, sales, purchasing, inventory, manufacturing, projects, assets and, with Frappe HR, payroll.
What is Nergaa Cloud?
Nergaa Cloud is managed hosting for ERPNext and Frappe apps at cloud.nergaa.cloud: create a site, pick your apps and pay with M-PESA, card or PayPal. It is built on Frappe Press.
What does Nergaa do?
NERGAA (Nextgen Enterprise Resources and Generative AI) provides managed ERPNext and Frappe hosting, ERPNext implementation, business intelligence with Metabase, WhatsApp for business and AI solutions.
How much does ERPNext hosting cost?
Sites on Nergaa Cloud start at $10 per month, with Business at $25 and Enterprise at $60, depending on CPU time, database and storage. New accounts get a free trial.
Do I need technical skills to use ERPNext?
No. ERPNext runs in the browser; we set it up, migrate your data and train your team. Developers can extend it with the Frappe Framework when needed.
Is my data backed up?
Yes. Sites are backed up on a schedule, database and files, and can be restored from the dashboard.
Can I use my own domain?
Yes. Point your domain at your Nergaa Cloud site and it gets its own SSL certificate automatically.
Which payment methods do you accept?
M-PESA, debit and credit cards, and PayPal, as prepaid credits. PayPal can also pay invoices automatically.
Frappe Hosting
What is the Frappe Framework?
Frappe is an open-source, low-code web framework written in Python and JavaScript with a MariaDB database. It provides doctypes, users and permissions, a REST API, reports, workflows, printing and a desk interface, and it is the foundation of ERPNext and the other Frappe apps.
Can I host my own custom Frappe app?
Yes. Custom Frappe apps from a GitHub repository can be added to your bench; they are built with the rest of your apps and deployed whenever you update.
Is Nergaa Cloud a Frappe Cloud alternative?
Yes. Nergaa Cloud runs on Frappe Press, the open-source platform behind Frappe Cloud, with local payment methods, WhatsApp for ERPNext and business intelligence included.
Which Frappe version do you run?
New sites run Frappe and ERPNext version 16. Existing sites can be moved to newer versions with an update from the dashboard.
ERP Software in Kenya
What is the best ERP software for small businesses in Kenya?
For most small and medium businesses, ERPNext offers the widest set of modules (accounting, inventory, sales, purchasing, payroll, manufacturing) without per-user licence fees, which keeps costs predictable as the team grows. Nergaa hosts and supports it locally.
Does ERPNext support Kenyan VAT and payroll?
Yes. ERPNext supports VAT and withholding tax templates, and Kenyan statutory payroll deductions (PAYE, NSSF, SHIF, housing levy) are configured as salary components in Frappe HR.
Can I pay with M-PESA?
Yes. Nergaa Cloud accepts M-PESA, card and PayPal top-ups for hosting, and M-PESA can be connected to ERPNext to record your own customer payments.
How much does ERPNext cost in Kenya?
ERPNext itself is free and open source. On Nergaa Cloud you pay for hosting from $10 per month per site, plus optional implementation and support. See the pricing page for current plans.
ERPNext Implementation
How long does an ERPNext implementation take?
A small business using accounting, sales, purchasing and stock is typically live in 4–8 weeks. Manufacturing, payroll and multi-company setups take longer; we agree the timeline in the discovery phase.
Can ERPNext be customized?
Yes. Most needs are met with configuration, custom fields, print formats, workflows and reports. Larger needs are built as a custom Frappe app, which keeps ERPNext upgradable.
Do you migrate data from other systems?
Yes — from spreadsheets, QuickBooks, Sage, Tally, Odoo and other ERPs. Balances are reconciled with your accountant before go-live.
ERPNext Modules
Is ERPNext free?
Yes. ERPNext and the Frappe Framework are open source under the GNU GPL licence, with no per-user licence fees. You pay only for hosting, implementation and support.
Does ERPNext have manufacturing?
Yes. ERPNext includes bills of materials, work orders, job cards, production planning, MRP and subcontracting.
Does ERPNext include payroll?
Payroll is part of Frappe HR (HRMS), which installs alongside ERPNext and adds employees, attendance, leave, expense claims and payroll.
ERP Comparison
Is ERPNext better than Odoo?
For businesses that want every module without per-user licences, ERPNext is usually the more economical choice. Odoo has a larger app marketplace. Both are capable; the decision usually comes down to total cost and the partner who will support you.
Can ERPNext replace SAP Business One?
For most small and mid-sized companies, yes: ERPNext covers accounting, inventory, sales, purchasing, manufacturing and reporting, without licence fees.
Can I move from QuickBooks or Sage to ERPNext?
Yes. Chart of accounts, customers, suppliers, items and opening balances are imported and reconciled before go-live.
